Vought Continues the Destruction of Musk’s DOGE, Groundwork’s Jacquez Warns
Today, Office of Management & Budget (OMB) Director Russell Vought will be on Capitol Hill to testify before the House Appropriations Committee on the President’s budget. Ahead of his testimony, Groundwork’s Chief of Policy & Advocacy Alex Jacquez released the following statement:
“While Elon Musk has left Washington – leaving a trail of destruction in his wake – Russell Vought continues to wreak havoc on essential government programs and the Americans they serve.
“From unlawfully freezing federal science funding to closing Social Security Administration offices, Vought is moving full steam ahead to codify DOGE’s reckless cuts to basic needs programs to fund billionaire tax giveaways. This is a deeply unpopular agenda that is making life more expensive and difficult for working families.”
BACKGROUND
- Vought is picking up right where Elon Musk left off, sending Congress nearly $10 billion in rescissions to codify DOGE cuts, with more to come.
- In an effort to mislead the public about the harm of DOGE cuts, President Trump and Vought failed to submit the required budget and spending plans laying out the Administration’s policy goals.
- Ahead of Vought’s appearance before the House Appropriations Committee, Trump and Vought failed to submit a full budget.
- In addition, Trump and Vought’s OMB failed to submit detailed spending plans for each government agency to the Appropriations Committees, which were due on April 29. Spending plans have not been submitted or are missing basic funding details.
- Vought has publicly stated that the Administration is considering illegal impoundment to formalize spending cuts made by DOGE without going through Congress.
- The illegal funding cuts implemented through DOGE are deeply unpopular with the public. Over the last three months, sentiment toward DOGE among independents has swung 29 points against DOGE, from (+7) to (-22) – with voters saying that they do not believe DOGE will make government work better for them.
