GOP Leaders Agree to Cut Trillions from Social Security, Medicare to Fund Tax Cuts for the Ultra-Wealthy

As part of a side deal to avert a government shutdown, Republican leadership today reportedly agreed to raise the debt limit by $1.5 trillion and cut $2.5 trillion in net mandatory spending in a reconciliation package. Groundwork Collaborative Executive Director Lindsay Owens reacted with the following statement:

“Republicans are already taking cues from Elon Musk and his DOGE commission and clearing the deck to ram through giant tax giveaways for the ultra-wealthy. Their plans for the new year are crystal clear: Cut trillions from Social Security, Medicare, and other critical programs to pay for their own massive tax cuts.”
