ICYMI: Shakedown at the Snack Counter – Groundwork Makes The Case for Street Pricing

Sports fans are getting benched by sky-high prices for ballgame must-haves: A $16 beer and a $7 hot dog quickly adds up and prices families out of an afternoon at the football game. Consumers are fed-up. Polling shows that 73% of voters — including 78% of Independents and 76% of Republicans — support policies that restrict vendors from overcharging for concessions.

Policymakers are taking notice of families’ frustrations. Last week, Lina Khan and the team helping New York City Mayor-Elect Zohran Mamdani move into Gracie Mansion called out sports owners and stadiums for running fans into the penalty box. Meanwhile, billionaire team owners cash in while everyday fans get sidelined.

A recent Groundwork Collaborative analysis dives into the issue of price gouging at stadiums and proposes new so-called “street pricing” policies to curb these practices.
