Today, Groundwork Collaborative named Mike Webb Groundwork’s Deputy Director and Chief of Communications. An award-winning and widely-regarded communications strategist, Webb will manage Groundwork’s growing communications team and lead its efforts to tell new stories about how the economy works and who it should work for.
“Trickle-down economic theories have been failing workers and weakening the country for far too long,” said Webb. “That’s why I’m thrilled to join Groundwork Collaborative, where I’ll help advance innovative policy proposals and narrative strategies to help improve the economy for all working people. I’m excited to get started.”
Webb most recently served as the Senior Vice President for Media and Marketing at The News Literacy Project. While there he led the launch of their annual National News Literacy Week and helped the organization win a Webby Award and a Literacy Award from the Library of Congress.
Webb was also the founding head of communications at ProPublica, which became the first online newsroom to win a Pulitzer Prize. While there he developed a media blueprint to ensure their investigations led to more accountability on topics ranging from fracking to Wall Street. He previously held senior positions at BerlinRosen and at the Brennan Center for Justice where he helped bring their voting rights research into the mainstream.
“Over the last few years, Groundwork has established itself as a leader in the field of economic communications, shaping the public’s understanding of topics from inflation to taxes and changing policy as a result,” said Lindsay Owens, Groundwork Collaborative’s executive director. “I’m thrilled to announce that we have recruited Mike Webb, an award-winning communications strategist, to lead this body of work into the future. I’m confident that under Mike’s leadership and vision, Groundwork’s innovative approach to communications and narrative change will grow in impact and reach, helping to fulfill our mission to build an economy that works for all of us.”
Webb has also held communications and marketing positions in newsrooms at The Nation and Honolulu Civil Beat, and he worked for elected officials in New York and Ohio. He holds a bachelor’s degree in communications from the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University.
