President Trump’s tariffs have already cost the average American family $1,200, and new polling from Groundwork Collaborative and Data for Progress shows voters — including 43% of Republicans — want the Trump administration to refund that money back directly to consumers.
The new poll, conducted after the Supreme Court ruling struck down much of the president’s trade agenda, also finds that the majority of Americans (65%) blame Trump’s disastrous tariff agenda for driving up their everyday costs. And while companies across the country have filed legal challenges seeking their own refunds, voters are skeptical they would benefit, with 72% saying they don’t trust businesses to lower prices if corporations receive refunds.
Americans support tariffs as a strategic tool, but only 19% view President Trump’s blanket and chaotic tariff approach as favorable. In fact, despite the president’s pronouncement that his tariffs would bring factories ‘roaring back,’ domestic manufacturing has stalled under Trump’s watch, losing 100,000 jobs since he took office.
BackgroundTrump’s tariffs are still broadly unpopular

Voters overwhelmingly reject Trump’s blanket tariffs
While voters say tariffs have raised their costs, support remains for strategic use of the tool. A plurality of voters (45%) prefer strategic tariffs, over no tariffs at all (31%). Trump’s current blanket approach is deeply unpopular at 19% support, including from just 37% of Republicans.
Domestic manufacturing continues to stall under Trump’s watch
Trump has claimed that his tariffs are necessary to revitalize American manufacturing. However, after one year back in office, the manufacturing sector has stalled.
