Today, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau released new guidance to assist agencies in cracking down on surveillance of workers, emphasizing that third-party reports — including surveillance-based, “black box” AI or algorithmic scores about workers — must follow Fair Credit Reporting Act rules. Groundwork Collaborative Senior Fellow Katie Wells reacted with the following statement:
“Surveillance tools, artificial intelligence, and algorithms are being weaponized against workers’ livelihoods and future careers. Today’s guidance from CFPB is crucial for checking new and worrying surveillance practices that unfairly infringe on workers’ lives.
“Workers deserve to know what data is being collected about their performance and to have the opportunity to dispute data that affect their wages, hours, and access to future jobs.”
