The economic outlook: Preparing for future headwinds
June 27, 2019 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Please RSVP to Sheree Hickman at Sheree_Hickman@wyden.senate.gov if you plan to attend
The offices of Sen. Van Hollen and Sen. Wyden invite Senate staff to attend a discussion about policies to respond to potential headwinds for the economy.
While the unemployment rate remains at a 50-year low, the most recent jobs report and other economic developments both here and abroad suggest a possible softening of the current 10-year economic expansion. Even if these recent pressures blow over, we must remain vigilant for a potential economic downturn. And with the Federal Reserve already keeping the interest rate they control historically low, there will likely be less “monetary space” to offset any future downturn. That means Congress’ response will be more important than ever. The members of the panel have long been considering the necessary fiscal policy response; this includes job programs, unemployment insurance, infrastructure investment, and support for health care, nutrition, and other basic needs. They will briefly present their ideas, followed by a Q&A session.
